Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha, occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a birth chart. Since these houses govern self, family, domestic life, marriage, and longevity respectively, Mars in a fiery, aggressive placement here is traditionally read as a risk factor for friction in married life — which is why the check is done so routinely before a Hindu wedding is finalized.
